We've been having a lot of fun this Advent Season with our ADVENTure box. Each night we open the box to find some "gift", read part of the Christmas story, and do some kind of activity. The last couple of days we've been acting out the part of the shepherds and the Magi. We did this last year, but are much more whole hearted about it this year, and I think we're all enjoying it a lot more, and much more thoughtful about the real reason we celebrate Christmas, the birth of the King!

On the night we talked about the Magi we improvised a Dutch Epiphany tradition and had the kids sing a Christmas song and then we shared some banket together.

Chimayo Weekend

This weekend Chris and I had the opportunity to take a get-away as a couple. It was long overdue, but so worth it! This is a little shout out to my husband - I'm so blessed to be married to Chris. He is such an encouragement to me, he makes me laugh, and works so hard for our family. It was wonderful to spend a weekend reconnecting and relaxing together! A special thanks to Linda, Shari, and Andrea for taking care of the kids! Sounds like they had fun too!

So, we went to a bed and breakfast in a little town in northern NM, Chimayo. There aren't any pictures of Ojo Caliente, the hot springs we spent most of Saturday soaking up, but it was quite the experience! A parent at Chris' school had recommended a "clothing optional" spa to us, but we decided that wasn't really our style, and went to Ojo...However, when we got to Ojo, we realized we hadn't brought our swim suits! We are now the proud owners of very luxurious suits sold to us at an exorbitant rate by the gift shop. Sorry, Babe! We also visited a church, El Santuario de Chimayo, which people make pilgrimages to every spring asking for healing. It was beautiful!

As has become our family pre-Thanksgiving tradition we spent Wednesday morning on a hike. We had beautiful weather all Thanksgiving weekend and so enjoyed being able to be outside!

Our dear friends the Postmas and Steve joined us for Thanksgiving dinner and spent the afternoon playing games together. What a blessing to have "family" in the body of Christ!

Grandpa and Grandma came for the Thanksgiving weekend. The kids had been excited about this visit for about three weeks and enjoyed time wrestling with Grandpa, playing "Chopped", going for a walk, playing at the gym, and getting our Christmas tree. We are so thankful that they were able to come and have time together.

Remembering

It's been almost two months since Chris' brother, Jason, passed away. We find ourselves thinking of him often and reminding ourselves to savor each moment, knowing life is sweet and fleeting on this earth. I know we've said it before, but these last 10 months have taught us much about ourselves, our friends and family, and about our faithful God. We are so thankful for those of you reading this who have upheld us in prayer, hugged us when we desperately needed a hug, watched our kids, laughed with us when we needed to be reminded that life really is GOOD, spoke truth to us over and over, and over, who gifted us generously financially, who sat by us in church and cried with us - you have been Christ to us, and we are beyond grateful.

We miss Jason. We grieve for the things he wont be present for. And yet, we find ourselves singing the song that has become our family's anthem, "Christ is Risen" by Matt Maher,

Christ is risen from the dead
We are one with Him again
Come awake, come awake!
Come and rise up from the grave!

Jason was blessed to be loved and welcomed into the Redder family over the last year of his life. Thank you Kim, Jan and Mike, Kyle, and Curt for loving Jason and walking through his journey with him. We said over and over to each other we were so thankful he had you to love him! Thank you also for giving to us, and to Rehoboth so generously! We took time today to get some pictures of the memorial bench - we just love it, and love going to the pond and enjoying the beauty of God's creation. When we got out there several kids were sitting on the bench, soaking up the sun and chatting, and it was a beautiful moment to see others blessed and enjoying the bench too.

To our Marlink family, thank you again, for loving us, for making sure my husband knows he's part of us. Below is a picture of the tree you gave us in memory of Jason. It's planted by the front of our house. It's a flowering crab apple, because in Chris' words "Yea, if I had to pick a fruit to describe Jason, it'd be a crab apple." We look forward to watching this tree grow and bloom every spring and to being reminded of how God is growing and hopefully bringing us to fruitfulness too.

The First Day of Kindergarten!

Today was the day we've been anticipating for a long time - Garrett's first day of kindergarten. Last night I made up our traditional first day of school Blueberry Stuffed French Toast, set the table, made a note, and Chris hung streamers. The house was ready for the big day, even if we weren't!

All in all, it was a good day! As I was in the kitchen last night Garrett came in and asked what I was making. When I told him breakfast, he got so excited, "Oh yeah, the first day of school breakfast!" I told Chris I'm so glad we have some traditions already in place so that even though this is Garrett's first he get's excited because he's sharing in this tradition that up until now has always been about Chris. Then, this morning when Clayton got up before Garrett he opened the door and saw the streamers "I was like, whoa, it's a party?" We ate our breakfast, took a few pictures, and because it was a late start day the boys even had a chance to play for a little bit (so good for Clayton). Garrett checked the time so often I lost count and we were out the door in plenty of time to walk to school. Our neighbor Eden came out to wish Garrett a good first day and take a picture - what a special girl to be so excited for him!

Chris met us on the way so that he could see Garrett at school. Garrett has a big group of kids in his class that he knows from our Friday morning Bible study or from church so he was comfortable with the kids right away. Chris and I chatted with some other parents, took a few pictures and then made our way out, me home and Chris back to school. Yes, I did well up, but not because I'm sad he's going to school. He is so ready and I know he's going to do great! For me, and I'm sure for lots of other parents, the emotion comes from realizing I've spent the last 5 1/2 years with Garrett, pretty much every day, and Chris and I have been the biggest influence in his life. Today that changed a bit and started us on a new journey where his friends and teachers influence him and shape him. I have to trust that we have laid a strong foundation for him to grow as a boy, friend, brother, and most importantly child of God. Before I walked him to school I told him how when I was little my mom always said "Remember to whom you belong" and how I was going to say that to him every day when he goes to school. "Do you know who you belong to?" "Yup, God, and you and Daddy." It is our prayer that that truth keeps growing deep and strong in his heart!

After we dropped off Garrett, I put Campbell down for a nap, and Clayton got a special surprise - new playdough, and Mama all to himself. Highlight of my day was at supper when he said playing with me was the best part of his day!

'Twas the Day Before School

Yesterday I could sense that we needed to have a break and that if we didn't leave the house we wouldn't make the most of Garrett's last day before starting school. So spur of the moment I grabbed some fruit and juice boxes loaded the kids into the van. We picked up some nuggets and headed to the park - it was an overcast morning perfect for hanging out! It ended up being just what we needed!

I think she didn't like having to wait to slide because she was all smiles at the bottom!

Garrett Meets the Teacher

This Tuesday morning Garrett had his "meet the teacher". With his bag loaded full of boxes of Kleenex, extra clothes, and school supplies we walked to the kindergarten to meet Mrs. Gilson and a few of Garrett's classmates. As exciting as this was for Garrett, it was also clear just how hard this was going to be for Clayton! Garrett loved every moment of this morning and Clayton was quiet - taking it all in, and realizing Garrett was off to an adventure he couldn't be part of.

Grand Haven Pier

Oma is always full of good ideas, and this time it was a picnic on the channel, walk on Grand Haven's Pier and, wait for it, wait for it, ICE CREAM! I know, you're shocked. You're thinking, really, AGAIN? And we say, YES!

It was a beautiful way to spend a Saturday evening! Chris and I were super impressed by the boys who walked the whole way without complaining! They were really excited to watch all of the boats going through the channel and kept asking which ones you could live on...They're ready for Opa's dream vacation on the house boat!

Horseback Riding

Chris' Aunt Judy had our family over while we were up in Branch. She and her husband Bill have a horse ranch where they rehabilitate rescued horses and pair the horses with youth for equine therapy. We weren't sure what the boys would think about the horses, but as soon as we mentioned that they might be able to go for a ride it was all they could talk about! They did great! My camera battery died during the ride or I would have pictures of the horses playing soccer with an enormous ball! It was super hot and dusty in the arena, so we were amazed by Judy and Bill's patience and willingness to give our kids this experience!

Gone Fishin'

We spent the past week up at Chris' parents house enjoying swimming a small lake and picnics as well as some wonderful time with Jason. Chris and I are so thankful to have been gifted this time to have here in Michigan and be part of Jason's journey with cancer. While we would have never wanted this, it is a privilege to go through this with him. One highlight of our week was a fishing afternoon with Grandpa. The boys caught nine fish; Clayton caught one on his first catch! Thanks Grandpa for a fun time!

We live out west, we have red rock cliffs to climb just a few miles from our back door. We live at 6,000 feet. And yet climbing Mt. Pisgah was a feat we were all proud of complete with beautiful views of Lake Michigan, Macatawa Lake and a hike through the woods.

After our hike we headed to the beach for a picnic and a chance to stick our toes in the water.

And again, what night is complete without ice cream??? So, we met Chris and Becky and family at the General Store and watched the boats on Lake Mac - I'd say cheap entertainment, but that's only true since Opa treated!

Campbell turns One!

Our beautiful daughter turned one a week and a half ago! Oh, Campbell how we love you! You are funny in your stoicism, sure of what you like and don't like, loud, a little bit silly, and certainly a joy! We have been so blessed to watch you grow this year, reminding us of God's faithfulness as you fought for life your first day and then never looked back; we are thankful God has allowed us to be your parents.

We celebrated Campbell's big day with dinner, cake and ice cream with Opa & Oma and Chris & Becky and kids. What fun to be able to share these days with our family - we know it's a treat we wont get every year so we are counting it as a blessing this year for sure!

Can you say cute kids??? I know I'm partial to my kids, but my nephew Crew just melts my heart!

Nikki's first 5k

For the last 10 years or so I have said I wanted to run a 5k. After having Campbell a year ago and struggling to find time for me, for fitness, to get back some energy Chris challenged me to actually run a 5k with him. He agreed to run with me in preparation and run the race with me. Every night for 3 weeks prior to the race (Zeeland Zoom) we would go for a run - I have always said I don't like to run, and I can now say I'm not a natural runner, but I don't mind it as much. Those runs together were the perfect chance to process our heartache, frustrations, laugh about funny things the kids had done and said...by the end I realized I ran a lot better if I didn't talk at all, which meant Chris got to do a lot more processing :). About a week before the race my knees started to really hurt, so we took the race pretty easy; Chris saw a lot of former running friends who wanted to know his time and I felt very responsible to let them know he had run with me! Thank you Chris for challenging me to do this and for helping me prove to myself that I could!

Mom, Becky and I decided to celebrate our men and Father's Day this year by sending them all to a Tigers game (Jesse got to go for his birthday)! While only Christopher was surprised by the tickets a good day was had by all! I am so thankful for my dad who has loved me so unconditionally, listened to me through many tough times, and encouraged me through all of them, for my two brothers who are still great friends, who have always been there for me, and for my husband who is my best friend, my biggest support, a wonderful father to our kids, and the one I can't imagine journeying through life without!

Sqirt Park and Ice Cream

Saying Goodbye

I'm going to attempt this post without crying through it...I doubt that will be successful! Anyway, 3 weeks ago we were able to spend a wonderful day with our friends Zach and Laura and their girls Zoe and Marley. They were staying at a cottage in Muskegon before heading off to their new adventure in Singapore. What a blessing to have a day together before we say goodbye for a while!

I am so thankful for the four years I have been able to know and live just up the hill (at both of our homes) from Laura. We have been through so much in these four years from the death of her brother to the birth of our children, Jason's battle with cancer, the buying of homes, the widowhood of being coaches wives. She has been a listening ear, a mentor, a friend to laugh and to cry with, to share a good bottle of wine, to grow in Christ with. We've learned many domestic things together - I guess now I need to find a new canning partner. I'm not really sure how I will go home and not have her there. Nope, now I'm crying...

Zoe and Marley have been the boys' best friends - when we actually said goodbye I held it together until Garrett started crying in the van, and then I was a mess.

I am so blessed to call her my friend! And thankful that she has to come back to Michigan to see her family so I know I'm guaranteed that this is just "for now"!

Family Fun Day!

We needed a day as a family just to laugh, to relax, and to enjoy each other. We've been in Michigan for two weeks now and it's been emotionally draining. We're so thankful to be here to help with Chris' brother Jason's care and so blessed that Chris has a job that has scheduled time off right now! But, we also know that for our marriage and for our kids we need to take a step back and just have fun! So that's what we did today!

We started with mini-golf and then went out for lunch. Then we came home for what was supposed a family nap time, but I ended up needing to go get diapers and Garrett and Chris rested for a short time and then had a Nerf war. We made our pizza for supper and watched Princess and the Frog (not a big hit, too scary). This day was just what all of us needed!

One story from this past week to give you a glimpse of what we've been trying to process: Chris was putting the boys to bed and was asking them how they feel when they're at Uncle Jason's and what they think. Garrett said he was sad because Uncle Jason is sick. Chris asked "How do you know he's sick?" Garrett: "Because you tell us." So, Chris, thinking that he's not getting much says "Do you have anything you want to ask me?" Garrett says: "Just one thing...How do you make curtains?" Oh I laughed when I heard that! What a breathe of fresh air these kids are to our heavy hearts!

On the last hole I looked down and saw this literally a foot away from me. Yuck.

We had lunch at New Holland Brewery, yummy pizza for the kids and sandwiches for me and Chris. And lots of silly faces!

Clayton excuses himself from the table almost every meal to give Campbell a kiss. Today it was quite funny as she kept turning her face toward him and he kept telling her "No, I don't want to kiss the dirty part!" He sure has a thing about being messy!

The funniest part of our movie night: Campbell leaned over in her chair which doesn't have a tray and started crawling around with the chair strapped to her back!

The Big 4!

Yesterday Clayton turned four. We celebrated with lunch with Opa, Oma and Uncle Jesse and then had a cousin birthday with Gibson, Crew, Uncle Chris, Aunt Becky and all four grandparents. We weren't planning to be in Michigan for Clayton's birthday and he was going to have a party with friends in New Mexico and then celebrate on a much smaller scale here, but due to Uncle Jason's health we came to Michigan early. We wanted to make sure that Clayton had a special day, and while he was disappointed that he wouldn't get a party with his friends he said "Well, we can just call it a cousin party instead." Ah, it's nice to have a child who can so easily go with the flow! This year has seen some big growth for Clayton. He is most proud of being able to ride in a booster seat, while we are happy to see his speech improving, to see him continue to love his brother and sister unfailingly, to want the best for others, and to see him grow in his understanding of God's love for him. We can't imagine life without him!
Who knew four years ago that Chris would be reliving his glory days celebrating Clayton's fourth birthday? Clayton has discovered a love for Transformers in the last six months or so, and it is a passion that he and Chris enjoy together. So, it was only natural that his birthday party should be themed Transformers. Sorry, it's been so long since I updated the blog I can't remember how to put pictures in any type of order! Below are a few highlights from his big day!

Spring Break

Last week was spring break for us, so we got out of Dodge, and headed North. We wanted to spend some time with Jason and we were blessed that he had a really "up" week to spend with us. We drove straight through to Chicago where we spent the night, met Opa and Oma and then Chris headed to MI while the kids and I spent the day in Chi-town.

Waiting for the Animal Show - it turned out to be the favorite part of the day for everyone. Clayton loved the Beluga whales, and Garrett thought the three penguins that waddled through the auditorium were pretty cool!

We took Jason and Grandma to the park and enjoyed some (as we far as we can tell) rare Michigan sunshine and donuts. The boys had a blast playing tickle monster and Campbell napped most of the time. But we did manage to capture a few adorable shots of that beautiful girl!

Jason really wanted to take the boat out onto the water, so he, Chris and Grandpa braved the frigid temps and put the boat in. They even made it out onto Lake Michigan!

We decided to take some family pictures at the Holland Fish and Game Club. The weather was beautiful, and the people were pretty good looking too!

A couple other highlights that we don't have pictures of were the tapas night we shared with the Marlink family and Jason and Kim and a dinner out to a nice restaurant with Jason and Kim. We were blessed by the time we were able to have with our family, and especially with Jason! We are looking forward to a visit from him and Kim soon!

Kidnapped

So, I never post without pictures, but I want to write this down and process it. Chris and I had something totally wonderful happen to us and I just have to share it.

We spent our morning "touring" the kindergarten here because Garrett is headed there next fall. When we left we were reminded to pick up a handbook from the Fellowship Hall, which I proceeded to do - Chris didn't go in because he didn't want to be asked to come back to work the Open House which he had done for most of the morning. As I walked out our Superintendent said "Oh, Chris forgot this". I took the envelope and walked out the door. Since it was addressed "VanSlootens" and already opened I opened it and read the contents. )Chris hadn't actually seen it yet)..."This is a RANSOM note." It went on to say that our kids were going to be kidnapped, and that to get them back we would have to go on a date night. A professional babysitter would be at our house at 5:30 and we had to do exactly what she told us.

WHAT!?! So, we anxiously awaited for the babysitter to arrive - all the while trying to figure out who was behind this. When LaShanda walked up to the house we thought "OK, so her parents are responsible." But, no, LaShanda had gotten a letter in her school mailbox saying that her Saturday night had been "hijacked" and that she had to babysit our kids (They included payment and did allow her to turn it down, but we're glad she didn't). She gave us the next clue which directed us to go to an Art Show featuring Rehoboth students' artwork where we would get our next clue. So, we got to the Art Show, and we were given our final clue, directions to go for dinner with a VERY generous gift certificate. The clue told us what time we to finish our date and said "We're watching you."

Chris and I went for dinner and felt sooo extravagant to order an appetizer, wine, amazing food, and gelato...We usually to this restaurant for pizza and gelato with the kids, so this was such a special treat! After dinner we had a little bit of time left so we did what lots of parents do on dates (we think) and stopped off at the grocery store and stopped to rent a movie. We arrived home a few minutes early and found a note taped to our back door saying that because we had complied with their demands they had also taken the liberty of cleaning our house. OK, this was just crazy! We walked into the house laughing about how extravagant this was and then we heard LaShanda calling "Nikki, um, Nikki? Can you come here?" I found her blindfolded and tied up on our living room couch! Apparently after she had put the kids to bed she came out of Campbell's room to find 4? people dressed in black with ski masks and goggles on who told her to be quiet and not ask questions. I couldn't believe that she didn't scream, but she said deep down she knew that the whole set-up of the night was kidnapping and hijacking so she was able to keep from totally freaking out! These people did laundry, cleaned our playroom, washed the dishes!

I don't know who did this. I have my suspicions, but no real idea of who could have come up with this. With all that has been going on in our life in the last nine months this act of kindness was so over the top, lavish, extravagant! Chris and I have said so many times since Campbell's birth that we are surrounded by such an amazing cloud of witnesses, and this was another example of how God has blessed us through our AMAZING community. As I sit here and think of how we have been upheld by our friends and neighbors, especially since Jason's diagnosis in December, I am so humbled to think that so many people have showered us with love, prayers, encouragement, support!

Because I'll probably never know who kidnapped our kids, this is my thank you note to them. Thank you for giving us time together as adults; you probably didn't know, but this was our first dinner date in 9 months (except once at Christmas from Oma and Opa)! Thank you for doing something for us that we haven't been able to do for ourselves. Thank you for your creativity which allowed us to have such fun and a sense of excitement! Thank you for taking our minds off of the many heavy things that we've been worrying and anxious about! Thank you for being part of our lives and for loving us, taking care of us, and praying for us!

And if you know who did this - you don't have to tell me - but please, give them a hug for me!

Somewhere along the way we have acquired a 5 year old. I'm not really sure how it happened. And yet, it's true, Garrett is 5. As we celebrated his birthday this year I was struck by how much life has changed, and what a blessing it is to be a mom. Garrett is thoughtful, imaginative, friendly, serious, goofy. I love watching him interact with Campbell and Clayton; he adores them! He wants to be helpful, and will ask me "Mama, is there anything I can help you with today?" He loves to teach others things that he is passionate about, and will make hand motions, tilt and nod his head to get the point across. I am really enjoying this phase of life, and hope we can hold onto it for a little while, and yet, it is so fun to see him grow and learn and become a boy!
Clayton had assured Garrett that he would tell him what his present was on his birthday...Just in case Garrett didn't know what he had gotten.

We had planned to celebrate at breakfast since we had church activities at night, but to our surprise Chris had a snow day and church was canceled. We were able to spend a fun day as a family, including Oma who let Garrett choose the restaurant for lunch...You guessed it, McDonald's.

I love that the boys always want to help me in the kitchen. I think they're going to be foodies.

We arrived back to New Mexico this weekend to a beautiful blanket of snow, and below 0 temps - it's COLD! But, the sun, in typical NM style, is shining brightly! The boys have been enjoying being outside with Chris who's been such a good sport and taken them out a few times to sled. He's such a good daddy! Campbell and I came out yesterday afternoon before it started to get too cold; I think she liked it too!

Crazy Bounce

This Christmas break was so anticipated. We'd been counting the days until we would get on a plane and fly to Michigan. Then, just 3 days before we were supposed to leave, we got a phone call that changed everything. Chris' brother, Jason had been admitted to the hospital and they had found a tumor on his kidney and lesions on a lung, and his spine. The next day his doctors told him that he most likely had Renal Cell cancer. This is an type of cancer that is unresponsive to chemo and radiation. Needless to say, we were thankful that we had already planned to come home.
So, we arrived in Michigan, spent some time with Jason, and then the next day he was admitted back to the hospital with a blood clot in his lung. He was there for 4 days. Chris was able to spend time with him daily, and we hope that was a blessing to Jason. During this time the doctors told him it was possible that he could have Wilm's Tumor, a rare form of childhood kidney cancer that has a much better prognosis. Currently, we are waiting for Jason to have another biopsy and to get an official diagnosis. But, we are hopeful that it will be Wilm's. We are entrusting Jason to God's care, knowing that he is the Great Physician. It's hard to be so far away and not really be able to be there, but we are so thankful that we could spend some time with him, and are trusting that God will give us many more such opportunities in the future.
A couple of years ago we tried Crazy Bounce with the boys and they didn't enjoy it, the slides were so big, and they were so little. But we thought it might be a good time to try it again, so Grandpa and Grandma joined Chris and the boys for a fun morning of running, sliding, and just being boys. They picked up me and Campbell for lunch, and we all had a good time being distracted. Thanks for a fun morning Grandpa and Grandma!

Great Wolf Lodge

The highlight of our vacation for our entire family was spending two days at Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City. All fall we have been looking forward to these days together to play as a family, and we were not disappointed. This place was phenomenal! Chris and I talked on our way home about how much we are enjoying these days with our boys now that they are able to do so much and we feel like we can really enjoy the same activities together. Our boys loved the water, we only got out of the pool to eat and sleep. They were adventurous and went down every slide, which made it so much fun! THANK YOU Opa and Oma for taking us! We loved it all!

Campbell was such a good baby, she slept well in the water park, and at night. We couldn't have asked for it to go more smoothly with her!

Every 5 minutes or so a huge water bucket is filled and then spills. There's always a huge crowd. The boys weren't big fans of the water pouring over them, but they were good enough to let me get a picture.

After several days of being in-side celebrating we needed some time OUTSIDE! We met Uncle Chris, Gibson and Crew at Kollen Park with Opa and had soooo much fun playing! Those boys have such a good time together.

We always spend Christmas Day with the VanSlootens and this year we were excited to be able to spend the day with Chris' sister and her family as well. Usually we see them the next day, so it was a special treat to have the extra time with them. The boys really enjoy their cousin Michael, and I wish I had gotten a picture of them playing "hunters". Michael got a toy cross-boy and the boys took turns pretending to be the deer/his dog. It was hilarious! They also loved playing hide and seek. Michael is so patient with them, and they just think the world of him.

We always spend Christmas Eve with the Marlinks, a whole day of family fun and togetherness; probably my favorite day of the whole year. It was wonderful for the boys to spend time with their cousins, and for the most part they play really well together and LOVE each other! We ate lots of good food, went to church and were able to relax and enjoy the day, it was wonderful!

We had high hopes of seeing the icebergs this winter, but even without them, the Lake was beautiful! The boys had so much fun finding icicles, and ice rocks to throw into the water; it was a gorgeous morning!

So, I don't have many pictures of our arrival to Michigan, but this one captures the excitement - Garrett in Opa's pirate hat. We got off the plane and headed to the "meeting area" only to find that Opa and Oma weren't there yet! So, we stalled by taking a bathroom break, and then I found O & O and Opa was able to sneak up and surprise the boys as they left the bathroom. Oh, how good it feels to be "home" with the ones we love!

Sinterklaas is Coming to Town

This Advent we have been following a blog called the Christmas Adventure Box. It's helping us to be more purposeful in preparing our hearts for Christmas and Jesus' birthday. We've tweaked things a little to fit our family, so instead of discussing St. Nicolas and doing stockings we talked about how St. Nicolas became Sinterklaas and had the boys put their klompens by their door. This morning they were sooo excited to see if Sinterklaas had left them anything! It's been neat to seem them think about what a legend is, and how if Sinterklaas is a legend they found treats in their shoes!

This past weekend was the Red Rock Balloon Fiesta. We attempted to go to the Glow in the Rocks (balloons are lit up after dark, near the side of the cliffs) on Friday, but were too late. So in an attempt to not miss it things again on Saturday we got there extra early...too early as it turned out! By the time the balloons were ready to lift off we were leaving. The morning was salvaged by breakfast at Grandpa's Grill - and hopefully we've learned some things for next year!

We had some fall fun yesterday and made cupcakes and cookies, and carved pumpkins. We also had our weekly pizza and a movie night and watched "It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown!" We invited our neighbor, and the boys' good friend, Eden over to spend the afternoon/evening with us. The boys watch for Eden to come home from school every day so they can play together and miss her when she's gone!

Clayton wasn't feeling the best when he woke up from his nap, but he soon snapped out of his funk, and had a great time!

Just Campbell

This post is dedicated to Campbell. I realized that we don't have many recent pictures of her here because she is often napping when we're doing fun stuff with the boys. She is a delight to all of us, and we are starting to feel like we're getting the hang of having 3 kids. She's mostly a happy baby, very talkative, wiggly, and she always wants to be part of the action! The boys are such good big brothers; they bring her toys, pick out her clothes, and tell me when they think she's tired or hungry. She's now four months old! She's on the verge of laughing, rolling from her back to her tummy, and she desperately wants to be able to sit up!

I found her full of smiles the other day while I was putting stuff away in her bedroom. She loves to look around and watch what everyone is doing. She especially loves for the boys to lay on the floor with her and talk to her.

Fall at the Zoo

It's Parent - Teacher Conference week so a friend and I decided to make the most of our hubbies being busy and get out of Dodge. We spent the day at the zoo with our 5 kids, it was great weather and pretty empty because school was in session for Albuquerque. We had a great time!

This mountain lion was so cool - the kids had leaves and twigs that they were waving around and it kept batting at them like a kitty playing with a toy.

The little map readers. Does anyone else find that as soon as their kids have the map they stop seeing the animals? We tried keeping the maps hidden for a while but eventually they found it!

RED WINGS HOCKEY!!!

We went to Phoenix two weekends ago to watch a Red Wings vs. Coyotes game! What fun! The crowd was about 50% Wings Fans, so that made it pretty exciting! The Wings won which made it even better! We really enjoyed being able to share something we love with our kids - hopefully someday they'll enjoy going to games as much as we do, but for now it's a good thing that the arena had a kid's rink and plenty of snacks :)

The boys thought this inflatable hockey player was cool, and then as we walked into the arena we got to walk through an inflatable Coyote head. We tickled his throat to make him cough and help insure that he would be distracted during the game and lose. :)

This week in preschool we're learning about apples. What better way to enjoy fall than by making Caramel Apples! I've never made my own caramel before so this was an experiment for us, and it turned out really well! Who knew school could be soooo yummy?

Garrett is so like me! I have a habit of sticking my tongue out when I'm really concentrating, and he does too!

The BIG 3-0!

Chris turned 30 this week and we enjoyed celebrating his birthday together! We started the day with a special treat - Blueberry Stuffed French Toast! It's a family favorite, but sadly we're now officially out of Michigan blueberries...we're looking forward to going picking in July!!!

It's our tradition to let the birthday-er choose the dinner and dessert and we open presents at dinner. So, Chris chose pizza and apple pie. We'll be enjoying all of his presents in a couple weeks when we road-trip to Phoenix for a Red Wings game - we're all going! Chris and the boys also got Red Wings shirts to wear to the game, and Chris will get to do a little "fun shopping" while we're there.

I had fun decorating the house for this momentous occasion. Chris even said "You decorated. It seems like more than normal." I don't usually do much for either of our birthdays so it was fun to play it up; the boys thought it was great to have balloons and such for Chris and it was nice that he enjoyed it too!

We are so thankful for Chris and all he does for our family and we look forward to many more years of enjoying life together!

Our BIG RACE day!

We've been waiting for this day for weeks, our Squash Blossom Classic Family Fun Run (and Chris' race too). We've trained (a little), and packed our race gear. We woke up early and headed out on a beautiful cool morning. I was so proud of the boys for going out and running, and we had a great time! Garrett really ran the whole mile. Luckily we had some friends who ran as well with older kids and Garrett was able to run with them so that I could stay with Clayton. Garrett was AMAZING!!! He finished in 15 minutes! Clayton did well too, and it was a good reminder for me to enjoy the beauty of God's creation as we ran past rocks, bushes and a pond that he wanted to check out!

Field Trip!

I've been teaching the boys preschool at home 4 mornings a week, and last week we studied ocean animals. The boys have been asking for several weeks when we could make a trip to ABQ to go to the aquarium, so we shuffled our curriculum around so that we could make it a 'field trip'. The boys had so much fun all week learning about sharks, whales, fish, and all kinds of strange sea creatures, all the while counting the days until we could go to the aquarium! It was such a fun family day!

This sting ray kept swimming over to the window and showing us his underside; pretty cool!

Labor Day

Can you guess where we went for a picnic on Labor Day weekend? If you follow our blog you shouldn't be surprised that we headed to McGaffey...We went with the Ippels and Bremer-Bennetts just off the trail to Milk Ranch Canyon, beautiful view, lots of deadly cactus...Both Garrett and Jaden were attacked.

This is just after Garrett walked into the cactus...he was very cautious after that about where he went, and sat by the fire for the rest of the night.

Clayton roasted a marshmallow for me, it was pretty burnt and covered in ashes (I ate it and even said "Yum"). I appreciated his effort.

We made our s'mores with Reeces Peanut Butter Cups, I think I'll never go back to regular s'mores!

A day Away

This Fall is seriously busy for our family. Chris is doing his administrative internship, is on Church Council, and has class at least once a week. Not to mention we have an infant and two preschoolers! So, we decided to take a day off a couple weeks ago and just have family time. I wanted to do some canning so we made a day of the trip to Farmington (to pick up peaches) and checked out the free kids' science museum there. It was pretty cool!

Rehoboth Block Party

A couple weeks ago we had a neighborhood block party, complete with Corn Hole. (Think bean bag toss meats horseshoes). It was so much fun to get together after everyone returned from their summer travels; Rehoboth sure clears out during Summer Vacation! We are so blessed to live in a great community with such wonderful people.

Trip to Phoenix

We joined the Minivan Club this summer, and took a trip to Phoenix to find just the right one. Our hotel had a great pool, and was across the street from Cabela's. That was probably the highlight of the trip for the boys, and we regret that we didn't take the camera! Who knew how exciting a sporting goods store could be!

We took some family pictures on Opa and Oma's last night...beautiful weather and beautiful family! Words can't express how blessed we were to have my parents here for 10 days! To know that the boys were well cared for and having blast made being at the hospital so much easier. They were so helpful, cleaning, doing laundry, and putting meals in the freezer (can't wait to eat those!); we had a great time together and are counting the days 'til we'll be together again!

Some of my favorite memories of growing up are from July 4th and my dad doing the "Sparkler Dance." (Don't think I've forgotten the time you launched that firecracker right at us all and put spark holes in my shirt though, Dad:) )....This 4th of July was pretty laid back for us, since we had just come home from the hospital, but we did light sparklers and watch some fireworks from our living room window.

Campbell's first Family Movie Night - I know Opa and Oma really enjoyed watching Word World with us!

Campbell Comes Home - Oh Happy Day!

We're having so much fun having Campbell home! The boys are so caring and loving! They are always asking where she is, giving her kisses, wanting to hold her, give her a pacifier, and share their animals. Clayton is always checking on her to make sure she isn't crying, and Garrett is often heard saying "She's so beautiful." There may come a day when she drives them crazy, but for now they simply adore her and want to show her off to everyone we meet on walks or stops by the house - they are proud big brothers!

Campbell's Birth!

On June 29th @ 8:49am we welcomed Campbell Marie VanSlooten into the world! Her birth had some complications which made the day pretty emotional and a little scary, but she is now doing great! We are all totally in love with this little girl!

Under the oxygen hood (she did not like it and was soon put on the tube that goes into the nostrils, we can't remember what it's called). She was on oxygen until 11:00pm the first night.

This is the first time I got to hold Campbell (6 hours after birth due to her high resperations rate, and low oxygen) and the first time Chris was able to hold her since bringing her up from the OR. A WONDERFUL moment!

Opa and Oma came to visit and to help take care of us when our third baby was scheduled to arrive. We took them up to McGaffey Lake and enjoyed a beautiful afternoon hike and had a nice picnic!

Our big guy just turned 3! We can hardly believe how much life has changed in those three years and how much laughter we have enjoyed because Clayton is part of our family. Memorial Weekend Camp-Out

The weather's been great lately so we decided to head up to the mountains for a quick camping trip. We love going to McGaffey; it's quiet, there are tall trees, green grass, wildflowers. It's just so soul-refreshing! This time was also special because it's the last time I'll be able to go for a while. We enjoyed playing in the meadow, hiking to the fire-tower, chocolate bananas, and just being together as a family. Some friends joined us (unplanned) and it was a great surprise, and fun to hang out at the fire together after the boys went to sleep. The only thing we need to improve upon is our sleeping arrangements - the nights get COLD up in the mountains, and we ended up with the boys in a sleeping bag with each of us (that was a tight squeeze for me and Garrett).

Every year we are a track family. Chris coaches, the boys and I come cheer; we spend almost 3 months "helping Daddy" with practices, going on Saturdays to meets, and having our own "tra meeks" wherever we go. It keeps us busy, but we really do enjoy it.

I have to admit though, that my favorite part of track is the weekend after the State Meet. We have a tradition of celebrating my birthday, Mother's Day, and surviving the season by going away the weekend after the Meet (my two big days always fall during this week). This year Chris even took an extra day off of school and we went to Phoenix! We had a blast swimming at the hotel, eating some good Mexican food for my birthday, walking through a really cool park, visiting the zoo, attending the boys' first pro baseball game, and shopping at Ikea (ok, really Chris and I had a blast there, but the boys were good shoppers).

Due to the heat Chris and I tried to sneak out of the zoo before seeing everything, but Garrett knows how to 'read' the map and informed us we hadn't seen everything...we compromised by picking 4 more animals before heading back to our air conditioned hotel room.

The zoo had misters to help keep visitors cool. We really appreciated this!

We went to the Diamondbacks' game, intending to cheer for the D-backs, but they lost big time, so we ended up cheering for the Brewers. The best part of the baseball game happened as we walked from our hotel to the stadium (about 1/2 mile walk). We heard a bike bell behind us on the sidewalk and a woman pulling a cart pulled up alongside us and offered to give us a ride the rest of the way. Let's be honest, I'm pregnant and it was HOT! We joked that it felt like the Amazing Race, but it was a relief for me, and a lot of fun for the boys. We look forward to the day when the boys enjoy the game as much as we do!

The Garden Project

Since we're going to be around this summer awaiting the arrival of Baby #3 we decided this was the perfect year to put in a garden. We brought in some soil, have started our herbs, broccoli, leeks, peppers and tomatoes inside and the peas and carrots outside. This is our 'try-it-out' year. We'll see how it goes, but it's been fun so far! We'll post some more pictures once it starts looking more like a garden.

Let the work begin! Mixing up the soil we brought in with the dirt in our yard...and pulling out lots of rocks!

Milk Ranch Canyon Hike 2

We tried Milk Ranch Canyon a week after we found it full of waterfalls, but sadly most of the water was gone. It was still beautiful and a great day for a hike, but we are sure glad we got there in time to see the waterfalls and snowmelt. Of course, there was enough water to throw rocks...

We've been hearing rumors that one of our favorite hiking spots was filled with waterfalls due to the huge amount of snow we had this winter, so with a beautiful Sunday evening stretching out before us we packed a picnic, towels, and dry clothes and headed out to Milk Ranch Canyon. We were not disappointed!

The top of the canyon is filled with little streams and puddles and flat spots to sit, so we let the boys splash and run and enjoyed our picnic.

Clayton fell in, and was upset for about the time it took to take his picture. Then he remembered how much fun he was having and got right back into the puddle jumping.

When Clayton gets excited he usually gets into a squat position and does some crazy dancing; here he was showing off his hotdog and saying what fun he was having.

Garrett said "This is a lot like McDonald's; you can eat, then play, then come back to eat again."

Dam building...I don't think they'll be able to stop the snowmelt, but a boy's gotta try right???

It was a wonderful evening and we're hoping to be able to get up there again next weekend before the runoff is gone - anyone want to join us?

Easter '10

Again this year we shared Easter with our friends the Huizingas. We are so blessed to have special people in our lives that can share these days with us when neither family can be with their immediate families. We also decided that a landscaped yard would be better for hiding eggs! Maybe next year!

Zoo Day

We took a break from house projects during Spring Break to spend a day at the Albuquerque Zoo and also did some shopping...It was a great family day!

We watched the polar bears for quite a while; they seemed to dance, they swam, and even played with their "toys". They were everyone's favorite animals.

It was the perfect day for a picnic, and we are quick to find any reason to have a picnic. ;)

Hosting the African Children's Choir

Last night we were blessed to attend a performance of the African Children's Choir at our church. Following the concert we hosted three 9 and 10 year old girls for the night. The girls got to our house pretty late, so the boys were excited to meet them this morning; the girls, for their part, had seen the playroom last night and could hardly wait to play this morning. It was so much fun and a blessing for our whole family. Here are a few shots we got this morning while everyone was having fun playing. We hope the choir comes back soon because we sure had a great time!

We can hardly believe that four years ago we brought Garrett home from the hospital in a winter storm, and napped through the Super Bowl! That little baby has become our rambunctious, cautious, singing, dancing, polite, detail-oriented, all-boy four-year old. He is full of hugs and kisses, likes to show/tell others how to do things "properly", and when asked what he wants to do now that he's four replies "wrestle Daddy". We sure do love this boy!

Garrett got some wonderful presents from Clayton, Opa and Oma, Grandpa and Grandma and Chris and I. Even though he loved them and was excited about them, it was just as much fun to see Clayton being thrilled by the new toys. You can just see it on his face!

We had to break out the knight costume right away to slay the tiger/dragon running around the house!

On Friday night we had some of Garrett's friends over to celebrate - Thomas and Percy style. I took on a massive undertaking this year and made a Percy cake for this party; it was a project that took all week. I started by making the face out of fondant and then making three sheet cakes to carve into Percy's body.

The boys really wanted to help construct Percy, but secretly their motive may have been licking the frosting off the beaters!

Here's the finished product! Whew, I'm proud of what I did, but I don't think I'll be doing it again (until Clayton decides he wants one for his birthday:)

This morning was warm and sunny, a change from the past week which has been cloudy and cold, and the kids were itching to be outside. It was even warm enough for me to pull out a camping chair and daydream of spring. The kids had a great time playing with their machinery, soaking up the sun, and pretending to eat ice-cream (I did make sure they only ate the clean snow). I'm so glad we could enjoy the fresh air before another storm is supposed to arrive tonight!

Well, it's about time to show off all the hard work that has taken place this fall! We have to thank Chris' dad for coming out and helping with several projects; it would have taken us so much longer to be as settled as we are if we had done it all on the Saturdays when Chris didn't have class this fall! We're pretty excited about the wood floors Chris refinished, our new bedroom ceiling and crown molding, and our wine rack.

Since returning to Rehoboth a week ago Chris has been hard at work on the new house. We pulled up the carpet last Thursday, and then Friday, Saturday, and Sunday were spent sanding and polyurethaning the beautiful hardwood floor in our bedroom, the living room and the dining room. It has turned out beautifully! We still have to do the quarter round and as you can see there is painting to be done on the trim and a few wall patches, but it's fun to see some progress!

We spent our last week in Michigan at Spider Lake with Nikki's family. While the weather was cool, we had a great time and were blessed to be able to relax and reconnect before heading home. We've been in Michigan for over a month already! Time has flown. Chris has been busy teaching four days a week for Upward Bound and Nikki has kept the boys busy doing all kinds of activities. We've been to 4 birthday parties, Nikki and the boys with Oma have been to Canada, Chris has camped amongst the mosquitos, we've made trips to Grandpa and Gradma's, gone to numerous parks, eaten lots of ice cream and many other amazing meals, and are still here for a little less than a month. Enjoy some of the snapshots of our summer so far.
